It unites lichenologists across the globe, as well as national and regional organisations into one group. It is affiliated to the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS). The IAL publishes a biennial journal, the International Lichenological Newsletter〔(【引用サイトリンク】url=http://www.lichenology.org/index.html?/Publications/ILNewsletter.html )〕 which was the raison d'etre for the IAL being formed in 1967 in order to provide a forum for lichenologists worldwide to communicate with one other. Nowadays the IAL also operates an online discussion forum for lichenologists known as 'lichens-L'. ==History== The International Lichenological Association arose out of the 10th International Botanical Congress, held in Edinburgh in 1964, when a small group of lichenologists approved a motion to form an international association. The intention was to produce a newsletter to disseminate information quickly amongst lichenologists around the world, and a small committee comprising Rolf Santesson, Peter James and Vernon Ahmadjian was appointed to get it established.
